Hamas announced on its official Twitter page that it executed one of its own “senior officials,” the Hebrew news site nrg reported on Sunday.
According to Hamas, Mahmoud Eshtewi was executed for “crimes of moral deviation.” However, when he was first arrested in early 2015 it was as part of an investigation into the betrayal of Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades commander Mohammad Deif to Israel during Operation Protective Edge in the summer of 2014, Israel’s Ynet News reported.
According to the report, using intelligence possibly conveyed by Eshtewi, the Israel Air Force unsuccessfully attempted to assassinate Deif in August that year.
