JNS.org – Two international organizations announced that they will fund and implement security upgrades to protect the Jewish community in the French city of Nice, where an Islamic State truck-ramming attack killed 86 people last July.

The International Fellowship of Christians and Jews (The Fellowship) and the World Jewish Congress (WJC) “will each be providing financial assistance, along with French Jewish organizations, for a series of security upgrades, including security systems and materials, for local communal institutions,” the organizations said Wednesday.

Although the dollar figure on the new funding was not disclosed, The Fellowship noted that it had provided nearly $100,000 in security upgrades for more than two dozen French Jewish institutions in 2016, as part of the organization’s broader distribution of more than $3.5 million in security funding for Jewish communities in 32 countries.

“As we’ve unfortunately seen over the past few years, murderous terrorists are targeting Jews and so many others, from Mumbai to Nice, while Jewish communities are facing intensifying anti-Semitic threats and attacks,” Rabbi Yechiel Eckstein, The Fellowship’s president and founder, said in a statement. “With partners like the World Jewish Congress, we are doing our utmost to defend Jews everywhere from this terrible scourge, while helping those who wish to move to their Jewish homeland.”

Five local Jews were among the 434 people wounded in last July’s truck attack in Nice. The security upgrades for Nice’s Jewish community — which consists of more than 25,000 people, one Ashkenazi and one Sephardi synagogue, kosher restaurants and a kosher butcher, and a mikvah (ritual bath) — will be implemented by the WJC’s Security Department.
