A veteran Palestinian terrorist who commanded an infamous 1987 attack in northern Israel was killed in Syria over the weekend in a military strike that was attributed by some Syrian media outlets to the IDF, the Hebrew news site nrg reported on Monday.

The death of Abd al-Rahim Ahmed Atik, nrg said, was confirmed by pamphlets published by the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine — General Command (PFLP-GC), which was founded in the late 1960s by Ahmed Jibril.

The PFLP-GC is an ally of President Bashar Assad’s regime in the ongoing civil war in Syria.

Israel, nrg reported, denied involvement in Sunday morning’s strike on the Naba Fawar base near Quneitra, in which three pro-Assad fighters — including, apparently, Atik — died.

According to the PFLP-GC pamphlets, Atik took part in a number of battles with the “Zionist enemy” and was the leader of the cell that carried out a Nov. 25, 1987 attack — remembered in Israel as the “Night of the Gliders” — in which two armed terrorists attempted to fly into northern Israel from Lebanon on hang gliders. One succeeded and stormed an Israeli military base east of Kiryat Shmona. Six IDF soldiers were killed before the terrorist was shot dead.
