US President Donald Trump’s special representative for international negotiations stepped up his rhetoric against the Palestinian terrorist group Hamas on Monday.

Jason Greenblatt — the president’s former lawyer who is currently playing a pivotal role in the administration’s attempt to bring Israelis and Palestinians to the negotiating table — said on Twitter that Gaza-ruling Hamas had only “brought ruin and misery” to the Palestinian people.

Greenblatt’s comments came as a delegation of senior Hamas officials continued an official visit to Iran.

He emphasized that Hamas was letting down the Palestinians time and again.

Greenblatt later tweeted a photo of himself with a delegation of Palestinian businessmen from Gaza, whom he said were much more ready for the day-to-day challenges facing their people.

Last week, Greenblatt angered Hamas by confirming that the terrorist group “must unambiguously and explicitly commit to nonviolence, recognize the State of Israel, accept previous agreements and obligations between the parties — including to disarm terrorists — and commit to peaceful negotiations.” This position towards Hamas was first established a decade ago by President George W. Bush, and was incorporated into UN Security Council Resolution 1850, passed in 2008.

A Hamas spokesman accused the United States of “blatantly interfering in matters that belong only to the Palestinian people.”

“We have the right to choose a government that is suitable for the Palestinians,” the spokesman added. “Jason Greenblatt’s statement contradicts previous statements that supported the internal Palestinian reconciliation, and was put out under pressure from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his extremist government.”
