Israel’s national anthem “HaTikvah” was played in the Gulf state of Qatar recently after an Israeli athlete won a gold medal at the Artistic Gymnastics World Cup over the weekend.

A video of the ceremony, posted on social media by Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Arabic Twitter account, showed gymnast Alexander Shatilov receiving the gold medal in the men’s floor exercise and then singing along as “HaTikvah” was heard throughout the stadium. The Israeli flag was also shown on a big screen inside the auditorium while the national anthem played.

Qatar, which has no diplomatic relations with Israel, also permitted the playing of “HaTikvah” and allowed athletes to wear Israeli badges on their clothes during the 2018 Artistic Gymnastics World Cup. The national anthem was played in Abu Dhabi for the first time ever last October after Israeli judoka Sagi Muki won a gold medal in the Judo Grand Competition.

Watch Alexander Shatilov receiving his gold medal at the 2019 Artistic Gymnastics World Cup in the video below.
