At a UN Security Council meeting on the Middle East on Tuesday, the US and Israel denounced Gaza-ruling Hamas over the rocket attack the previous day in which a home was destroyed north of Tel Aviv.
“We will not accept a reality in which our children become targets of Hamas,” Israeli UN Ambassador Danny Danon said.
“Do not be mistaken — if the terror from Gaza continues, the Hamas leadership will feel the strength of the IDF and be buried in the tunnels of Gaza,” Danon added. “The international community must unequivocally condemn Hamas and recognize it as a terrorist organization.”
Acting US Ambassador Jonathan Cohen said, “I think we can all agree on the need for Israelis and Palestinians to work together with the support of the international community to improve conditions in Gaza and the West Bank. But this malicious and insidious violence is a clear signal from Hamas and others in Gaza who see such cooperation and progress as counter to their aims.”
“Each of us around this table has a responsibility to condemn the rocket attacks, but we must also recognize that in addition to terrorizing Israeli civilians, Hamas has failed to provide for Palestinians in Gaza and, most recently, cracked down violently on Palestinian protesters,” he continued.
“We agree that many factors have contributed to the situation in Gaza, but the international community needs to shine a light on Hamas’ injustices, such as rocket attacks into Israel and encouraging and praising violence against innocent Israelis but also how they treat their fellow Palestinian brothers and sisters,” Cohen noted.
In an interview with The Algemeiner on Monday, Danon said, “It is unacceptable that Hamas is committing a double war crime, using Gaza’s civilian population as a human shield and targeting our towns.”
Seven Israelis were wounded in Monday’s rocket attack. The Israeli military responded with strikes on Hamas targets in Gaza.
