Israeli swimmer Ami Omer Dadaon won a gold medal and broke the world record in the men’s 100 meter freestyle on Tuesday during the second day of competition at the 2023 Para Swimming World Championships in Manchester, England.
Dadaon clocked 1 minute 18.94 seconds, beating the world record of 1:19.26 that he set earlier this year at the Para Swimming World Cup in Berlin. Five new world records were made on Tuesday during the World Championships and three of them in the 100 meter freestyle — two in men’s and one in women’s.
Dadaon, who has cerebral palsy, holds the Guinness World Record for the fastest 200 meter freestyle swim by a male para swimmer in the section 4 category — 2 minutes 44.84 seconds. He clocked in the time at the 2020 Paralympic Games in Tokyo, Japan, on Aug. 30, 2021, beating his own previous world record by six seconds. He also won a silver in the men’s 150 meter individual medley during the same competition.
The athlete previously took home three gold medal in the 2021 European Championships in Portugal — in the 50 meter, 100 meter and 200 meter freestyle races.
A total of 538 athletes from 67 countries are competing in the 2023 Para Swimming World Championships, taking place from July 31-Aug. 6.
