A Jewish man was shot on his way to synagogue in Chicago in broad daylight on Saturday, according to the Chicago Police Department.

The man, 39, was shot by a 22-year-old gunman, Sidi Mohamed Abdallahi, in the 2,600 block of North Washtenaw Avenue, an area home to many Orthodox Jews, police said.

Abdallahi was reportedly heard on a security camera recording yelling “Allahu Akbar” before engaging in a shootout with Chicago police.

He was arrested following the gun battle on Saturday morning, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

“At about 9:55, the offender reemerged from an alley and fired shots at the officers and at the responding paramedics,” Chicago Deputy Police Chief Kevin Bruno told reporters.
