Many Arabs were unhappy with the German under-21 soccer team’s choice to include the phrase “we feel at home” in Hebrew on their warm-up jerseys during a match at the UEFA under-21 championship being held currently in Israel, and they took to social media sites to voice their anger, the Elaph online newspaper reported Tuesday.
According to a translation provided by anonymous pro-Israel blogger Elder of Ziyon, Elaph wrote:
“There was a state of anger and extreme indignation among Arabs and Palestinians on websites and social networks, especially Facebook and Twitter, because this move was ‘provocative’ to the feelings of the victims and the wounded and injured by the brutality and racism of the Israeli occupation forces.”
The activists said that Germany was trying to further atone for Nazi crimes with the gesture.
