Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas declared Monday that in any future peace deal between Israel and the Palestinian Authority, the Jewish State must leave “Palestinian land,” while conceding that “the Jewish state has the right to preserve its security within its borders,” in comments made three days after it was announced that direct negotiations would resume between the two sides.
In the remarks published by the Jordanian government-owned Al-Rai newspaper, Abbas said: “Any security solution must permanently get Israel out of Palestinian land, while the Jewish state has the right to preserve its security within its borders, with the approval of neighboring countries.”
Abbas also confirmed other reports released over the weekend that any future peace deal with Israel will be brought before the public for a vote.
“Any agreement with the Israelis will be brought to a referendum,” Abbas said.
During his weekly Cabinet meeting on Sunday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made the same promise, saying that any peace deal with the Palestinian Authority must be brought to a vote among Israeli citizens.
On Friday U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry announced the resumption of direct-negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian Authority, and said the two sides would meet in Washington in the coming weeks.
The last round of direct peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians broke down in 2010.
