Stanley Collymore, a popular former British footballer and now sports broadcaster, called for police and Twitter to take action against online hate speech targeting Jewish fans and Tottenham Hotspur, a British team from a historically Jewish neighborhood, whose fans are often referred to as “the Yids.”
On Monday night, Collymore posted a collage of the hateful tweets, mostly from supporters of rival team Arsenal, including, “Every Tottenham fan can be put back in the gas chambers and gassed on to death!” and “I laugh at your oven baked ancestors.”
Despite efforts to educate players, which included a trip by the British National Team to Auschwitz, fans displaying hatred for Jews came to the forefront in 2013.
Last week, West Bromwich’s French forward Nicolas Anelka “courted controversy by mimicking a salute known as the quenelle, popularized by a compatriot comedian whose views are widely described as anti-Semitic,” the UK’s Jewish News reported on Tuesday.
The Jewish News also carried Twitter comments from former England footballer Ian Wright, who said he was “ashamed” of the anti-Semitic rants of fans of Arsenal, his former team.
On Twitter, Wright said: “Gotta say, reading some of the tweets the spurs fans are sending about what AFC fans say about the Holocaust! Ashamed!”
