Demonstrations were held across Israel on Friday against the peace plan currently being pushed by U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, Israeli daily Ma’ariv reported.
The demonstrations took place at several motorway intersections, with protesters waving signs bearing slogans such as, “To Keep Israel Safe, Don’t Surrender to Kerry”, the paper said.
The various rallies were organized by the Yesha Council, which represents Jewish communities in the West Bank, and the ‘Land of the Deer’ movement.
The focus of the marches was on a U.S.-backed proposal to have Israel surrender control over the Jordan Valley as part of a comprehensive peace deal with the Palestinian Authority, Ma’ariv said.
The protesters handed out literature and carried signs showing quotations of previous Israeli Prime Ministers as compared to statements made by John Kerry.
One such sign included a quote from slain Israeli Premier Yitzchak Rabin, who said, “A secure border for the State of Israel is the Jordan Valley – in its most expansive interpretation.”
According to leaders of the protest movement, “Our aim is Kerry’s isolation within Israeli society… Israel and its leaders are saying ‘no’ to Kerry,” Ma’ariv reported.
Organizers also urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to remain steadfast in the face of apparent U.S. pressure. “The Prime Minister must follow the path of previous Israeli leaders and not succumb to American threats,” they said.
