Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday slammed the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for its recent “absurd” string of resolutions condemning Israel, even as major rights abuses take place elsewhere in the region.
“Over the weekend the UN Human Rights Council condemned Israel five times, this at a time when the slaughter in Syria is continuing, innocent people are being hung in the Middle East and human rights are being eroded,” he told ministers at his government’s weekly cabinet meeting. “In many countries free media are being shut down and the UN Human Rights Council decides to condemn Israel for closing off a balcony. This is absurd. This march of hypocrisy is continuing and we will continue to condemn it and expose it.”
The 47-member UNHRC on Friday passed four resolutions critical of Israel’s interactions with Palestinians and one on its presence in the Golan Heights, The Algemeiner reported. The U.S. was the only country to vote against the resolutions.
Netanyahu also reassured his ministers on Sunday that Israel’s economy is “in good shape” and noted that the unemployment rate in the country is among the lowest Israel has seen in many years.
