The International Business Times on Thursday removed a story highlighting conspiracy theories that connect Israel’s Mossad spy agency to Wednesday’s deadly shooting at the Charlie Hebdo magazine headquarters in Paris that left 12 dead.
IBT Editor-in-Chief Peter Goodman announced the news Thursday on Twitter, calling the article “wholly inappropriate.” The news outlet also published an editor’s note saying that it regrets publishing the “erroneous article.”
“A story reporting on conspiracy theorists who allege a link between Israeli intelligence and the Paris shootings should never have been published and we have therefore removed it from our site,” the editor’s note said. “The story was beneath our standards and we apologize for this basic lapse in judgement.”
The removed article was published by IBTimes India and its headline read: “Charlie Hedbo Attack and Mossad Link: Is Israel Venting Its Fury For France’s Recognition of Palestine State?”
George Pitcher, editor-in-chief for IBTimes UK, also expressed remorse for the story being published. He posted a Twitter message saying, “Story making grossly offensive and unsubstantiated ref to Israeli links to #CharlieHebdo taken down. I apologize unreservedly.”
