The International Business Times on Thursday removed a story highlighting conspiracy theories that connect Israel’s Mossad spy agency to Wednesday’s deadly shooting at the Charlie Hebdo magazine headquarters in Paris that left 12 dead.

IBT Editor-in-Chief Peter Goodman announced the news Thursday on Twitter, calling the article “wholly inappropriate.” The news outlet also published an editor’s note saying that it regrets publishing the “erroneous article.”

Church of Scotland’s Rejection of BDS and Criticism of Hamas Draws Cautious Welcome From Country’s Jews

Scottish Jews have cautiously welcomed the Church of Scotland's decision at its annual General Assembly to reject the BDS campaign...

“A story reporting on conspiracy theorists who allege a link between Israeli intelligence and the Paris shootings should never have been published and we have therefore removed it from our site,” the editor’s note said. “The story was beneath our standards and we apologize for this basic lapse in judgement.”

The removed article was published by IBTimes India and its headline read: “Charlie Hedbo Attack and Mossad Link: Is Israel Venting Its Fury For France’s Recognition of Palestine State?”

George Pitcher, editor-in-chief for IBTimes UK, also expressed remorse for the story being published. He posted a Twitter message saying, “Story making grossly offensive and unsubstantiated ref to Israeli links to #CharlieHebdo taken down. I apologize unreservedly.”

I guess you guys don’t want to hear the truth?

“I apologize unreservedly,” or “article was wholly inappropriate” or “beneath our standards,” are simply outrageous and unacceptable. How can a serious newspaper organization like the IBT write an incendiary article without vetting and clear fact determination? Writing an apology afterwards does not cut it. The damage has already been done. The publication of the article demonstrates a serious anti-Semitic prejudice that allows an articles like this to pass without any fact checking, just an ad hominem accusation. Suppose a serious newspaper wrote an article entitled “Jews Use Babies’ Blood for Matzohs” and the next day published a retraction with an apology saying the article was “beneath our standards.” Would that neutralize all the harm done?

so what happen to liberty of expression

  • Josephine Goldman

Do you mean to say that such a clever man can’t see that an article is outrageous BEFORE he publishes it? Once the damage has been done fine words of apology are easy. What deeds will follow his remorse?

    • Randall Vogt

It wasn’t a voluntary retraction, period. Many have found since 1948, from US General Nathaniel Twinning right up to this articles publisher: Mess with the Jewish State, disseminate anything negative about Israel or her right to exist, or the efforts of the internal Israeli government agencies to promote their agenda (as done by all governments) and the Hasbara Trolls cometh forth.

No besmirch shall go unnoticed, no slight however slight, no criticism of policy, action or plan no matter if published in mainstream news outlets or a lowly blog or comment response escapes their wrath. They incessantly flame, injure and outright threaten, typically using the old “anti-semitic” rhetoric to pressure, censure and ultimately bury or totally remove any writings they deem unfit, using the standard tactic of “I am more offended than the others who are offended. and this is such an offensive and totally fabricated outright lie (which somehow harms Israel and her people) that it must be removed and you forever barred from even thinking of posting another such tale”.

I’m not judging the validity of this article, and have no idea who is really behind the attacks, but if a reporter felt that it was worth his reputation to submit it and the agency saw fit to include it in their publication, the audience has the right to ingest the information and draw their own conclusions without the interference of ultra-nationalists/ right wing internet trolling.
History has shown many such attacks were indeed “false flags” and the possibility of these being such is a valid question, whether or not someone gets ‘butt hurt’ over the alleged involvement of Mossad agents acting to promote an agenda already proven to foster such actions.

The piece should have been viewed as speculation and published as such unless concrete evidence was also given, names named and a paper trail (which always exists) brought to light.

I am not a jew but I got so upset when I read that article. Even if you wouldn’t like jews you should get angry when you read this. Every time the islamic terrorists do a shocking thing, the conspiracy theorists say it is done by the jews in order to give the muslims a bad name.
Amongst the muslims who do not support muslim terrorism,a huge part will happily accept the conspiracy theory because it makes them feel better.

    • mark

correction, showing the link with mossad and false flag attacks supposedly carried out by ‘islamists’ does not serve to give the muslims a bad name!! neither does it make ordinary jews angry, I am a Jew of the tribe of Benjamine, I am not jewish!! but let me be clear what these events do and showing the link between Mossad (a zionist secret service that have been proven to kill innocent people, torture etc)… showing the link between mossad and these supposed islamist attacks only serves to show Jewish communities as vulnerable and defensless, and to the extreme of this defencelessness, mossad and the Israeli army are justified in its unrealistic views and actions against its neighbouring, peoples, lands and cultures. this trumped up ideal of defencelessness also aides and abets the manipulative propaganda of sole sympathy for the jewish Holocaust and denies any sympathy for any other Holocaust of non jewish people. again i am a Jew (not jewish) therefore i cannot be against myself because i am a descendant of shem (who the jewish people call sem/sematic) i am not against myself because i am shem just like jewish people say they are from shem.

    • Randall V

“Every time the islamic(sp) terrorists do a shocking thing, the conspiracy theorists say it is done by the jews(sp) in order to give the muslims(sp) a bad name”?

In order to give Muslims a bad name, wouldn’t you think they’d try to shift blame back to them, and not implicate the Jews?

In case you forgot to include the word “not” in front of the word “give”, my question is moot, but if your point was to sell another conspiracy theory (namely the one that tries to pose as fact) about a true problem that simply calling something you don’t like a conspiracy theory negates the item beyond any reason, and proves your personal prejudice.

The left wing press will work feverously until this incident can be blamed on Israel.

  • charlie johnson

The real conspiracy is the terrorist links to the news media. Most are loosing money because of the internet and many find them to be hired liars who promote any story that will grab attention. A conglomerate of stinking rich socialist.

  • shloime

journalistic standards are a matter of professional integrity, not “judgement”.

  • David M

The IBT incident is reflective of the general anti-Israel and a slightly more camouflaged, anti-Semitic attitude still running through much of Europe’s press.

One must wonder at such a short collective memory. It was just some 70 years since the full horror of the Holocaust became known. And today’s Muslim youth along with its more native-born anti-Semites repeat the 30’s. The saddest part to recognize is that they probably don’t even know how closely they follow those patterns of the late 20’s and 30’s.

    • shloime

there is no collectve memory, and there is no collective guilt.

in germany, the cliche is that all germans were born after the war, so why burden them with the older generation’s guilt?

and in france, an amazing 100% are descendants of the 1% who actively took part in the résistance. or so they say.

    • Randall V

The attitude of the European press is more anti-Zionist and centrist (or center-left at worst), rather than “anti-Semitic” and calling them out with these tired and overly used accusations only inflames ever more ire directed back to the accuser(s). There also have been many other genocides since the Holocaust, with death tolls equal or greater to that of the Jewish horror, but no large scale actions are taken to remember or prevent them from happening again and again.
People (even many Jews, some in my family) are tired of being reminded over and over of the atrocities of the Nazi regime and the constant comparisons to modern events, no matter the validity of the claims.

The problem isn’t that we can’t change the past, but that we seem equally helpless to prevent the same happening again.

Simply put- To any ‘at risk’ civilian populace: Regardless of the number of times we speak of it, or the number of bullets we expend in the opposition of repeating the pacifism of the past, we shall always fail in our efforts to prevent our enslavement or the murder of our citizens if the same forms and figures of government(s) continues to rule our lives.

Let’s all work together to call attention to the real problem and find a solution which will do more than erect yet another monument to the fallen. The time is now to act on this matter, not wait for it to happen again.

If you are unsure of the problem, simply ask yourself who benefits from the undoing of others?
