Jordan has vowed that it will exact “punishment and revenge” against the Islamic State terrorist organization after a gruesome video was posted online apparently showing a captured pilot from the Hashemite Kingdom’s airforce being burned alive.
The video shows a man standing in a cage being engulfed in flames. Jordanian officials fear the man is Lt. Moaz al-Kasasbeh, who was captured when his plane came down near Raqqa, Syria, in December on a mission to support the US-led military coalition against IS.
The video posted online on Tuesday was distributed via a Twitter account known as a source for IS propaganda, the BBC reported.
The slickly produced 22-minute video includes a sequence showing the Jordanian pilot walking at gunpoint amongst rubble apparently caused by coalition air strikes that targeted jihadists.
At a tribal meeting place where the pilot’s relatives have waited for weeks for word on his fate, chants against Jordan’s King Abdullah II erupted and some family members wept, AP reported. An uncle shouted in Arabic: “I received a phone call from the chief of staff saying God bless his soul.”
Hundreds of protesters later took to the streets, chanting: “There is no god but God and the martyr is beloved by God.”
The video appeared aimed at pressuring Jordan to leave the coalition that has been battling to roll back the Islamic State’s onslaught through Syria and Iraq.
