A student at Northwestern University said he was harassed at a Students for Justice in Palestine event, videotaped the incident and sent it off as a complaint to the university, the Daily Northwestern reported on Wednesday.
The student approached the SJP demonstration with a video-recording device and told the organizers of his intention to send the video to a friend of his, a soldier in the Israel Defense Forces.
“You’re sending it to killers, great,” the organizer of the event responded in the video footage obtained by the student paper.
The sophomore student, who asked to remain anonymous because of the sensitivity of the issue, said the comment was harassment because it made him feel uncomfortable as a Jew on campus.
“People think of her as a killer. (She) just wants people to be safe and is no way a racist or hates Palestinians,” he said.
He said even though many Jews such as himself believe in a two-state solution and do not harbor racist beliefs against Arabs or Palestinians, many are unfairly labeled as racist, according to the report.
The incident occurred at a SJP on-campus initiative where organizers set up a fake check post to mimic Israeli ones in the West Bank. Organizers said the demonstration was also meant to portray the U.S.-Mexican border, “intending to show the intersection” of the Israeli-Palestinian issue and American border practices targeting migrants from Latin America.
Last year, Northeastern University banned SJP from its campus over a campaign in which fake eviction notices were slid under student doors, to mimic alleged Israeli practices in the Palestinian territories.
