A shopper was up in arms over a stall he encountered at the Redwood Country Flea Market in Wallingford, Connecticut selling Nazi and Confederate memorabilia, a local newspaper reported last week.
“I was shaking and almost vomiting,” said the local shopper, who informed police of his discovery. “My grandmother had numbers [on her arm].”
Unfortunately for the unnerved local, police who arrived at the market to investigate the man’s complaints informed him that there was nothing they could do to force the seller to remove the items. They were being sold from private property, said the officers, according to the Record-Journal.
The merchant was apparently in possession of Nazi memorabilia ranging from German helmets with swastikas to images of Hitler and “Jewish stars of David.”
When probed about the Nazi and Confederate merchandise, the seller said he was “selling so much I can’t keep it in stock.”
Joshua Sayles, assistant regional director of the Anti-Defamation League in Connecticut, said that selling Nazi merchandise is not a moral issue if the items in question are authentic war pieces. Still, these items are often cheap replicas whose ultimate purpose is usually dubious and hateful, he said.
As merchants across the country responded to calls for a ban on public displays of the Confederate flag by removing related merchandise — including large retailers such as Amazon, Walmart and eBay — many have pointed out that Nazi items remain for sale. A cursory search on Amazon reveals books discussing Holocaust denial and decorative items with Nazi imagery.
