German fighter jets aiding French strikes in Syria are being fitted with Israeli technology, the Israeli news site nrg reported on Sunday.
According to the report, the Tornado jets will provide intelligence on ISIS to the French using Israeli equipment — such as the RecceLite Pod and the LiteningPod — developed by Israeli defense technology company Rafael Advanced Defense Systems Ltd., in cooperation with Germany’s Zeiss Optronik GmbH.
Germany and Israel have also cooperated on developing electronic warfare (EW) technology used by the Tornado jets. In 1972, Germany enlisted the aid of the Israel Aerospace Industries subsidiary ELTA Systems to co-develop the Tornado’s Self-Protection Jammer, and commercial production of the EW system began in the late 1990’s.
ELTA specializes in the production of radar and EW products with multiple applications, including reconnaissance, target acquisition, self-protection and self-defense.
