Israel favorably views the possibility that President-elect Donald Trump’s Jewish son-in-law Jared Kushner will serve as a peace broker with the Palestinians, the South China Morning Post reported on Tuesday.
In an interview published in the Hong Kong-based newspaper’s “This Week in Asia” section, Israeli Deputy Foreign Minister Tzipi Hotovely said, “We would be so happy if someone could bring peace to the Middle East. We welcome him.”
Hotovely was referring to a suggestion made by Trump during a recent meeting with New York Times representatives that the 35-year-old Kushner — who is married to Trump’s daughter, Ivanka — could help forge an Israeli-Palestinian peace agreement, a goal that has eluded so many past American presidents.
“I think he’d be very good at it,” Trump said. “I mean he knows it so well. He knows the region, knows the people, knows the players.”
The fact that Kushner is a Jew, Hotovely noted, is irrelevant to his potential role. “What matters is that he is American…we will be happy if someone can promote peace,” she said.
Hotovely, the South China Morning Post reported, was visiting Hong Kong to accept a World Health Organization award for Israel’s field hospital expertise. With Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu holding the foreign affairs portfolio, Hotovely is Israel’s highest-ranking full-time diplomat.
In the interview, Hotovely expressed confidence that outgoing President Barack Obama would, during his remaining time in the White House, veto any possible Security Council resolutions condemning Israeli settlements or setting the parameters for a peace deal.
“I don’t see the American president not vetoing such a resolution because it is against his own interest,” Hotovely said. “His interest is that the sides will come and talk and [doing this] is counter-productive to that.”
