The notorious French antisemitic propagandist Dieudonné Mbala Mbala – known simply as “Dieudonné” – is reportedly heading to North Korea for a September 9 event billed as a “peace festival.”

Dieudonné, who calls himself a comedian, is the inventor of the “quenelle” — an inverted Nazi salute that briefly became a viral phenomenon on social media in 2013. Banned from the UK, Canada and Belgium among other countries, Dieudonné has been convicted numerous times in France for violating hate speech laws.

In 2013, he suggested that a prominent Jewish journalist belonged in a “gas chamber,” which brought him a fine of $24,000. In March 2015, Dieudonné was hit with a seven-year suspended prison sentence and a $106,000 fine for a Facebook post in which he expressed sympathy with the Islamist terrorist who murdered four Jews in a kosher supermarket in Paris two months previously. One of his songs, entitled “Shoananas” — a word that combines “Shoah,” the Hebrew word for “Holocaust,” with “ananas,” the French word for “pineapple” — pokes fun at the six million Jewish victims of the Nazis.

According to the subscription website NK News, Dieudonné will head a “delegation” to the world’s foremost totalitarian state that is being organized by Bollo Nils, “a self-described coordinator between the DPRK state-run Korean International Sports Travel Company (KISTC) and French tourists.”

According to Nils’ website, the places that the group will visit include “supermarkets” and “a fun fair.” Two-thirds of North Koreans are reported by international aid groups to be seriously malnourished, while the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) warned in August that the country is facing a new famine.

“The One who controls events seems to have charged me with a mission: to spread peace by making my contemporaries laugh,” Dieudonné announced on his YouTube channel. “There is no better place in the world than the epicenter of war tensions to let the hope of peace blossom from the artistic emotion. I am against war, that’s why I’m going.”

He added that he planned to hold a “private show” at what he called a “peace festival to help the two Koreas get together.”

Accompanying Dieudonné on the North Korean visit will be Alain Soral, a former communist who defected to the Front National and is currently an unaffiliated far-right activist. Like Dieudonné, with whom he now actively collaborates, Soral has been penalized in the French courts on several occasions for antisemitic and racist statements.
