A man with a Palestinian flag yelling “God is great” was detained by police in the Netherlands on Thursday after smashing the windows of a kosher Jewish restaurant in Amsterdam.
The violent outburst came a day after US President Donald Trump recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, a decision that reversed decades of US foreign policy, angered much of the Muslim world and was widely rejected by Western leaders.
The assailant, who was wearing a black-and-white-checkered head scarf, smashed several windows of the restaurant HaCarmel before he was pushed to the ground and hand-cuffed by police, a video of the incident posted on local media websites showed.
“We are disgusted,” the Organization of Jewish Communities in The Netherlands said in a statement. The attack was “an act of revenge, meant to instill fear, and is no less than an act of terror.”
Avichai Meir — emissary of the Jewish Agency and the World Bnei Akiva movement in Amsterdam — said, “President Trump’s announcement on recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital was received here with great joy. In this context, the incident today at the HaCarmel restaurant did nothing to harm our happiness. Nevertheless, everyone sees this unusual incident with great severity. This is a place known to the entire community, as well as to all Jewish tourists visiting the city, and tearing the flag and trampling on it is crossing a dangerous red line.”
“The Jewish world and Europe is sick of seeing the image of shattered windows, and we all hope the authorities will bring the perpetrator to justice and take care of the safety of the city’s residents,” Meir continued. “The owner is an ardent Zionist and a great supporter of World Bnei Akiva, and, within hours, he hung a new flag. After this, many members of the Jewish community called on all members of the others to come and dine at the restaurant this evening.”
