US President Donald Trump talked by phone on Sunday with Rabbi Yisroel Goldstein, who was wounded the previous day in a deadly shooting attack at his synagogue near San Diego.
“I spoke at length yesterday to Rabbi Yisroel Goldstein, Chabad of Poway, where I extended my warmest condolences to him and all affected by the shooting in California,” Trump tweeted on Monday. “What a great guy. He had a least one finger blown off, and all he wanted to do is help others. Very special!”

At a press conference on Sunday, Goldstein recalled his conversation with Trump, saying, “He was just so comforting. I’m really grateful to our president for taking the time and making that effort to share with us his comfort and consolation.”
“He shared with me condolences on behalf of the United States of America,” Goldstein added. “And he spoke about his love of peace and Judaism and Israel.”
The suspect in Saturday’s attack, John Earnest, is set to appear in a San Diego court on Wednesday.
