Jewish Population on Campus
Jewish students make up about 20 percent of the undergraduate population at the University of Maryland. The community has access to kosher meal plans, multiple religious services, and even maintains its own student-run newspaper. In November, UMD’s student government rejected a BDS bill that was opposed by over 1,000 students, 140 faculty members, Sen. Ben Cardin (D-Md.), and six Democratic members of Congress representing Maryland. However, Jewish students still face attacks on their identity by some members of the campus community. Several swastikas were found on campus in 2017, while SJP and the school's Muslim Political Alliance led a protest in May of the Jewish Student Union's annual Israel Fest. The school has also come under scrutiny for the June firing of former assistant professor Melissa Landa, who claims she was targeted due to her pro-Israel activism. UMD denies the charge.
