The head of the IDF’s secretive Maglan commando unit said Hamas in Gaza is using UNRWA equipment to dig its longest tunnels under Israeli territory.
Lt.-Gen. Yuval, in conversation with the Walla news site, said on Friday that the complex warrens of tunnels and shafts reminded him of the extensive underground tunneling of the Vietcong in Vietnam, in battle against the United States.
Deep within one major tunnel, some 25 meters underground, he revealed the existence of a “lobby,” packed with weapons and bunkers designed to withstand air strikes.
Among the armaments and tools found in the tunnel, UNRWA aid supplies, originally sent to Hamas to be used for the overground Palestinians’ benefit.
In recent days, the Maglan unit’s forces succeeded in killing or capturing dozens of terrorists and confiscating explosive belts, according to the IDF.
The army said Sunday that, over the last 24-hours, it had targeted 130 targets and killed 40 terrorists in the Gaza Strip. Overall, since the beginning of Operation Protective Edge, the army said it has hit more than 3,550 targets, killed 240 and uncovered more than 30 tunnels.
Among the major targets were several command and control positions, including the Hamas’ Ministry of Public Security and offices of Hamas’ Izzadin al – Qassam Brigades military wing.
