A local Jewish leader was hospitalized on Monday after a bomb exploded in his business office in the central Russian city of Kazan.

According to The Moscow Times, Mikhail Skoblionok and an assistant at his construction and sales company suffered burns and eye injuries when an explosive concealed in a package went off upon opening.

An investigation was launched into the incident. The Moscow Times report said investigators believed the attack was linked to Skoblionok’s “commercial activity.”

Skoblionok, also known as Mr. Abramovich, is the head of the Jewish community in the Republic of Tatarstan.

World Jewish Congress CEO and Executive Vice President Robert Singer said in a statement that he was “shocked and horrified” by the bombing.

“I wish to extend my best wishes to Mr. Abramovich and his family and hope for a speedy recovery,” Singer said. “I have known Mr. Abramovich for more than 25 years, and have seen that the rebirth and well-being of his community was, and is, in large extent due to his personal involvement. We fully trust that the local authorities are doing all in their power to investigate and ensure that the perpetrators behind this evil and sickening act are brought to justice as soon as possible.”
