A Tehran regime official gloated on Friday that the US had “failed” in Syria following the Trump administration’s announcement of the withdrawal of American troops from the country.
At Friday prayers in the Iranian capital, Ayatollah Mohammed Emami-Kashani — a member of the regime’s Assembly of Experts — said, according to the Mehr news agency, “When the Americans say that they need to leave Syria it means that they have failed in the country. They have also failed in Yemen, Iraq and other areas. And God willing, both the United States and Zionist regime and their milk cow, Saudi Arabia, will also be discredited and destroyed.”
The Tasnim news agency quoted Emami-Kashani as saying, “It was the bravery of the martyrs and their families which caused the United States to turn tail and leave Syria” — an apparent reference to Iranian soldiers who have died fighting on behalf of Tehran’s ally, the Assad regime, in recent years.
Tasnim also reported on a speech delivered by Brig. Gen. Mohammad Pakpour — the commander of Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Ground Forces — on Friday, in which he welcomed the American pullout from Syria.
“When the enemy miscalculates and faces problems in its actions, it revises its strategy,” Pakpour told reporters ahead of a military exercise in southern Iran. “Accordingly, the Americans have come to the conclusion that they can exercise power neither in Iraq and Syria, nor in the entire region.”
