A spokesman for Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas said on Tuesday that President Donald Trump’s yet-to-be-unveiled peace plan was a “conspiracy” the Palestinians would “thwart.”
The Trump administration’s initiative is set to kick off next week with an economic workshop in Bahrain focused on investment in the Palestinian territories, which the Palestinians are refusing to take part in.
According to the Israeli news site Mako, Nabil Abu Rudeineh said, “The position of the president and the Palestinian leadership, which is centered on Jerusalem, the prisoners, and Palestinian identity, will thwart all the conspiracies, workshops, and meetings.”
Rudeineh appeared to denounce the presence of representatives of Arab countries at the upcoming June 25-26 gathering in Manama, saying, “The legitimate address is the president and his people who advocate the correct political position.”
“Every meeting in Bahrain or anywhere else, held without the legitimate Palestinian leadership, proves that Washington cannot succeed and will not succeed in achieving anything by itself and by its own forces,” he said.
“The Palestinian position and determination and the international consensus have preserved Jerusalem, the sanctity, and the Palestinian entity,” he asserted.
“The position of the people is clear and straightforward,” Rudeineh added, “and it will defeat any collusion.”
In an opinion piece published by CNN on Sunday, Trump’s special representative for international negotiations Jason Greenblatt, a key player in the administration’s peace push, called the economic workshop “an opportunity of a generation.”
Of the Palestinian leadership’s opposition to the event, Greenblatt said, “How sad for the Palestinians.”
“It is disheartening to see the supposed leaders of the Palestinians attack Palestinian entrepreneurs and Palestinian supporters in general for supporting a better future for their people,” he added.
“The Palestinian leadership portrays participation in the workshop as treasonous,” Greenblatt said. “That is preposterous. Supporters of this workshop want only the best for the Palestinians and the region.”
“We thank those bold and courageous enough to come to Bahrain in an effort to forge a new, brighter future for all those involved,” he stated.
