Alex Chalmers
Oxford University student
Sometimes, an action by a courageous individual can have a meaningful global impact.
Such is the case with Alex Chalmers, who made headlines worldwide in early 2016 when he quit his position as co-chair of the Oxford University Labour Club.
“A large proportion of the student left at Oxford has a problem with Jews,” said Chalmers.
His decision resulted in an announcement by the Oxford Jewish Society of ongoing antisemitism within the Oxford student club, as well as a national investigation, with Labour MP John Mann calling on his party to sever its relations with the student club and sending a letter to Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn to this effect.
Chalmers, who notably is not Jewish, has since been described by thought-leaders as “bravely decent” and as having exposed “rampant antisemitism.”
