US Jewish organizations roundly condemned Friday’s massacre at an Egyptian mosque in northern Sinai, in which more than 300 people were murdered by up to 30 Islamist gunmen who arrived at the house of worship in SUVs wearing military uniforms. More than 100 people were also wounded in what officials said was the worst terrorist atrocity experienced by Egypt in its modern history.
Stephen M. Greenberg, Chairman, and Malcolm Hoenlein, CEO, of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations expressed “our condolences and deepest sympathy to the families of those killed in this barbaric terror attack and offer our prayers for the recovery of those who were wounded.”
They continued: “This attack by ISIS targeting Muslims at prayer is a despicable crime and the perpetrators must be stopped. The international community should intensify efforts to help the government of Egypt stamp out this scourge of terrorism. The Conference stands in solidarity with the Egyptian people and their government during this difficult time.”
World Jewish Congress President Ronald S. Lauder said his organization “harshly and unequivocally condemns the horrifying and barbaric terrorist attack carried out against innocent civilians in Egypt… World Jewry stands in solidarity with the victims of the attack, and all of the people of Egypt.”
“Terrorism of this kind does not discriminate – we are all targets,” Lauder said. “Decent people of all religions, faiths, and nationalities in this world must defend each other and look after each other. We cannot let terror reign.”
The Anti-Defamation League also condemned the attack.
“This newest attack on a Sufi mosque… is an attack on the respect of diverse communities, cultures, and religions,” ADL CEO Jonathan Greenblatt said. “ADL stands in solidarity with the Egyptian nation and the Sufi Muslim community and against those who seek to promote division, hatred and terror.”
