A new video released by the Al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of the Hamas terrorist organization, offers a new picture as to how the kidnapping of Gilad Shalit unfolded following a raid on his base in 2006.
The video, which runs for more than 44 minutes, claims that after crossing through a break in the border fence between Israel and Gaza, the terrorists made their escape with Shalit in two waiting pickup trucks.
The video purports to show the planning and actual execution of the kidnapping of Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit in 2006. It opens with several interviews of Hamas officials. It then details the training undertaken by the kidnappers as well as the development of the plan to kidnap an Israeli soldier from Shalit’s army base, and culminates with a reenactment of the operation itself.
According to the video the base at which Shalit was stationed was monitored by a team of terrorists, while another team dug a tunnel under the border fence. Upon emerging from the tunnel they were surprised to find that the tunnel brought them 300 meters shy of the base and so they crawled to a thicket nearby.
At the moment of the terrorists’ assault, their comrades in Gaza began firing rockets and mortar shells at the Kerem Shalom army base. One squad placed an explosive charge at the base of a Merkava tank’s turret, detonating it with an anti-tank missile. Another charged a guard tower, and another attacked a nearby armored personnel carrier.
In the dramatized reenactment the Hamas men gunned down two Israeli soldiers, Hanan Barak and Pavel Slutzker. Thereafter Shalit emerged from the tank, hands raised.
According to the video, Shalit initially believed that his attackers were Israelis. When the terrorists reached the tank Shalit shouted “I am a Jew, I am a Jew.”
The film was released on the one year anniversary of Shalit’s return to Israel after being held captive by Hamas for over five years in Gaza.
