Saturday may be the Sabbath for some, but for New York Knicks star Amar’e Stoudemire donning a black yarmulke during practice was the closest he could get to observing the Jewish day of rest.

According to the New York Post, Stoudemire was spotted leaving Indianapolis’s Bankers Life Field House wearing the skullcap, following his team’s practice. The Knicks lost their game to the Pacers that night and were bounced from the playoffs.

Stoudemire, who claims to have Jewish roots on his mother’s side, has begun to observe the religion in his day-to-day life in recent years. Last year he was married in a traditional Jewish ceremony, and in 2010 he made a high-profile trip to Israel.
